Pub #38:

The Avery was an old factory and downstairs still has that feel, with beams held up by cast iron posts and large windows everywhere to provide the lighting. It is rather huge so it seemed especially empty for late afternoon lunch, but that made it easy to get a view of the park out back, Parkers Piece.

It has a giant bar on each level and word is that the place is crowded in the evenings.  Another nice touch was the note on the front door specifying that track suits and trainers would be turned away after 6 pm so I guess riff raff like me have no business there.

[picture of the downstairs bar goes here when I retrieve it from my home pc]

Had an Old Speckled Hen (Greene King), along with the cheese burger.  This was the first burger I’ve had in the UK that didn’t taste like it had some sort of vegetable protein stretcher added to it, juicy and beefy and only a little overcooked.  The bun smelled of yeast and was soft and dense, whilst the greens and tomatoes were fresh and they actually had pickles (not fresh cucumbers, but actually pickled ones).  The food took awhile to arrive, but well worth the wait.
