Back in the Fork Handles after an Oxford evening, I found that one of the two Christmas ales from two days ago was still on offer but the other had been replaced by three more…a Christmas miracle! I chose Bah Humbug mostly because of the Blackadder Brewery name, but they had a cunning plan to win me over:
Overall: One of those rare treats you stumble upon and know you will never see again, so you ravish it while you can.
Colour: Used copper kettle, pleasingly burnt orange
Aroma: Bazooka Joe Bubble Gum
Mouth: Medium bodied and strongly alcoholic (but still less than 5% in reality…just the review impression, and the one that the wife noted when I arrived home an hour-and-a-half later).
Flavour: This was the part that made it seem more April Fools than Christmas…it was malty like scotch and my notes at the time say “aspirin crushed into a shot of blended scotch” (which I know a thing or two about). Very nice hoppy finish like a Goldings hop but also a bit floral like an NW USA hop found its way in there. Awesome winter beer.
