Jackie offered to take me out drinking and dining for my birthday, yesterday, and I chose this place because of their many culinary awards and because if we got lost we could flag down some pensioner and say, “you wouldn’t know where we could find Cock, would you?”  Oh, the merriment!

The bar and the restaurant have separate entrances but both dump out onto the garden ’round back.  We didn’t book ahead so we had to wait until a little after 2 for a waiter, but that was fine as we were able to enjoy drinks in the garden and grabbed the next available table.  I started with a Wolf Golden Jackal, a very tasty, bitter yellow brew; if you ever see this on the pumps and can’t decide what you want, then this is probably it.

Our waiter came and I settled on lamb with potatoes, spiced eggplant and marinated turnips, whilst Jackie went for some lobster and crab cakes.  The second round was to mate with the food, so I got a Potbelly Beijing Black (a strong, dark, chocolatey mild) which turned out to be a really good choice.

Hemingford Grey sits on the far side of the River Great Ouse from St. Ives and is a really pretty village.  Going there for nibbles at Cock is highly recommended.

  1. I ran this place for 5 years to August 2009. Thanks for the memories.
