A large greyhound greeted me at the door of the Blue Ball and led me over to the bar. On the way, I narrowly avoided the iron ring toss game proceeding in front of the fireplace. Safely covering the distance, I got an Adnams Bitter which was almost berry scented and completely lovely.
One guy came in and pointed out his new van (purchased for 300 pounds) and we had a nice round of automotive stories. Two other guys came in and settled into a dominos tournament and groused about the quality of the previous night’s band. The bar lady agreed that they just didn’t swing.
This is an especially cozy bar and the garden looks very inviting even in the drizzly weather. This shall almost certainly become one of my favourites.

There was a peak in the rate of pub visitation in the summer as I had later sunlight to run by. The number pubs remaining in the area that I would consider “new” has also dwindled so lately I find a new one every week or so. Most often, though, I visit the Red Lion in Stretham because the bar is a mere 50 steps from my front door; in Ely, I tend to favour the Town House and my favourite pub of all off the list is the Blue Ball in Grantchester.
