Red Bull, Newnham, Cambridge

red-bull

The Red Bull is out Barton Road not far from the Chemistry Department.  It is located about a mile north of Byron’s Pool, this eddy in the River Cam that Lord Byron used to swim and that features in this 1910 travel guide to Cambridge I was reading whilst enjoying my nachos and a Sussex Best Bitter.

Well, I was enjoying the Bitter but the nachos were, not surprisingly, not very good.  I know better than to order mexican food here, and have planned to carry fresh cilantro (they call it coriander, here) and pickled jalapenos to every place I do go, but the real answer is to stick with kababs and Indian food.

The pub had just opened for the day so there weren’t many folks in there, and they weren’t interested in having any company so I looked around at the decor.  Bright place, lots of windows, smell of freshly waxed and polished tables (they actually glowed), and only the one television.  Nothing really special, but not a bad place, either.

[Note: I believe that the Red Bull got it's name long before the energy drink ever came about, but in a nod to Brownie, here is My New Haircut, British Edition...]:

    Did they serve jagerbombs?

Updated the post to account for jager bomb comment…if it doesn’t make sense to you, go to you tube and search “My New Haircut,” and try to find the original before moving onto the other versions. MANY other versions.
